AFTER CARE

First and foremost I wanted to say thank you for getting a tattoo from me. I consider it a massive honour and I appreciate you and your trust. I hope you like it as much as I do!

The primary part of looking after your tattoo is fairly straight forward and consists of you leaving on the clingfilm which is covering your fresh tattoo until you intend to clean it, Ideally I’d avoid doing this until 3 hours after your tattoo and no longer then 24 hours prior. I recommend you taking it off in the shower or the bath (this is due to the water softening the tape with has been used to hold the clingfilm onto your skin, and as a result of this, this process will be less painful) after you have removed the clingfilm if you simply run medium temperature water over it in order to remove and excess blood, ink or plasma which will have formed over the top of it. once this has been removed you should let the tattoo air dry rather then drying it with a towel.

After you take the clingfilm off of the tattoo, if you wait 24 hours before applying any healing agent this will allow the healing process to begin through the formation of the scab.

When applying any recommended tattoo healing cream ( I always recommend Palmer’s unscented coco butter, I use it for all of mine. It is fairly inexpensive and accessible. Should be available at a local pharmacy) I will always recommend being more conservative with the amount used, for example a peas worth for a palm sized tattoo. This is because we want to avoid the tattoo becoming over moisturised because this can result in the scab falling off prematurely, so like all things in life use in moderation, the tattoo will benefit from this.

The healing process should take around 2 weeks to heal and another month to settle into the skin, however this is relative to the area in which the tattoo was applied, the size, if colour was used and also density.

Things to consider: if you are working in a particular field where your tattoo is going to be subject to dirt or other things that may irritate the tattoo. I would recommend covering the healing tattoo with a loose item of clothing e.g a long sleeve t shirt. do not re-wrap the tattoo with clingfilm when it is scabbing as this will moisten the tattoo and may cause the scab to fall off.

THINGS TO AVOID

* Soaking your tattoo in the bath or by swimming. ( you can have a bath on the day you got the tattoo but not whilst the tattoo is scabbing )
* Burning your tattoo e.g do not sunbath.
* Getting tattoos within a short period of time ( 2 weeks in-between sessions is recommended due to the fact that your immune system will be compromised due to a healing tattoo and may negatively impact the healing of your fresh tattoo )
